Autumn has arrived, getting cooler and damper, so it’s time for doing some more jobs in the garden. Fortunately the weather wasn’t too extreme this month, with less damage than we had in September and August, although I did wake up one morning to find that the fuchsias had tumbled in the night following a sneaky wind
The most significant change this month was adding more raised beds in the veg garden. I really liked the first set we put in. They make it easier to work. it takes less time stopping the weeds from invading, and gives better drainage. And they look tidy :). So that’s all of the veg beds built now, just need to fill them all with soil from the mountain left from last month’s building works
The polytunnel was looking a little green. At some point the cover will need to be replaced, but for now, it just gets patched up with clear tape, and a washdown every now and then to let more light in. I struggle to get the top done though.
I keep giving parts of the garden rather grandiose names. This is ‘The Woodland’ incorporating ‘The Stumpery’. Really it’s just the corner by the gate that has a few very old lilacs and lots of self seeded cherry and damson saplings. It had a bit of a makeover with lots of bulbs planted for spring, thousands (no exaggeration!) of new seedlings and smaller saplingsremoved, bark/shredding on paths and a few odds and ends planted (mostly cyclamen) to brighten it up.
Harvesting continues, although it’s getting towards the end of the season. Plenty of apples bagged up and sent to Skidbrooke for cyder, and still plenty left for us.
There’s still some colour in the garden, although the summer rush is over. The nasturtiums in particular seem happy to continue until we get frosts.
And sadly this will be the last entry with pictures of Chester. He left us at the grand old age of 19. Greatly missed.
