2020 – January

A quiet month, mostly because we both had ‘the lurgy’ for the first half. The weather has been mixed, although generally warmer than average, and by the end of the month there are early signs of spring – buds budding and snowdrops snowdropping.

Most of the outside work has been in the orchard, winter pruning. I delayed pruning one tree as it was still providing a last few apples for the blackbirds and other wildlife.

The veg garden will need some attention soon. The last few crops to be lifted, and green manure dug in. But as it is still quite chilly I set up my new propagating tray in the potting shed. Large tray, sand, soil warming cables and thermostat. Andy made a frame for a cover. So high tech seed sowing will be starting soon. Also pleased to see that the lavender seedlings sown as an experiment with seeds collected when I dried some of the flowers have come through the winter do far unscathed.

Chester being Chester as usual. Helping paint, sort seeds, take a shower, until ready for a nap

He’d have been more help if he’d seen off the mice. Here’s the car being towed away for repairs after mice chewed through various wires. The joys of a rural life 🙂
