After a relatively warm September, autumn definitely arrived in October. And with it one of the main tasks – converting most of the contents of the orchard to cider.
Yes, we do cheat slightly – we take the apples to a professional and get excellent cider back in return.
Another autumn sight is a lot of fungus everywhere, unfortunately I don;t know much about the different types, so unless it is causing a problem I leave it alone
It’s also time to finish most of the harvesting, and where necessary store the excess. The freezers have been full for months, so other methods are required – dehydrating and bottling for example.
Most of the garden is beginning to fade, but a few stars keep shining.
And still enough decent weather to get on with some jobs, cutting back the willow hedge, moving some more of the soil mountain about, creating a new shaded spring flowering bed, and exercising the wheelbarrows by getting a load of mulch delivered.
Autumn is also time for the first of the bad wather, so damage outdoors and playing indoors. The squirrel definitely seems at home here and has cleared the walnut tree, and any hazelnuts I didn’t pic (I leave him all of the high ones…)
And the month ends with Halloween. Happy Pumpkin season to everyone.
