2021 – April

What was the weather doing this April? Frost, snow, and even sun, but no April showers. This severely disrupted plans to get the borders dug over and planted up in the back garden. I even had to get the hose out for seedlings elsewhere in the garden and make my own rainbow.

We did at least get the turf lifted that had been cut by ‘the beast’ at the end of March. Of course we then had to find somewhere to put all of that turf. Fortunately I haven’t yet run out of corners to stash stuff…

On the bright side, Covid restrictions have eased slightly, and so we became open for visitors again. It was lovely to see people, and even celebrate a delayed Christmas.

As the ground was too hard for digging, and too dry for planting we switched and made April all about the pond. This had been partly dug since we had the patio built last year, so it was good to finally get it in finished. It will take a while to settle, and for the plants to spread, but already it adds interest and the birds love it.

Meanwhile in the veg garden, I planted some mutant spiders that will alegedly turn into asparagus plants. First harvests of rhubarb (and radishes), and the apple trees are showing plenty of buds, so we should get some good blossom next month.

The spring flowers are continuing to grow, and despite the drought I sowed thousands of annual seeds (No exaggeration!) So fingers crossed that they manage to grow in the dry conditions and we’ll have a bit more colour in the garden this year.

And finally… A blotchy blackbird (technical term:- a leucistic blackbird) that has been living in the garden. The answer to why I call one bit of the garden the wheelbarrow park, and the greenhouse starting to fill up with seedlings. Please note the sophisticated bread-tray staging.

Hi Louise, I’m staying in Saltfleetby the week after next. Would love to have a look at the veg garden and orchard if you are around . It all looks super stunning!
Ps did you ever match up the unnamed apple tree with the map? Could it have been one of the rootstock trees maybe?
Hope you and Andrew are both well.
No prob if not convenient to visit.

      Hi Sarah

Very very sorry I missed this, I’m afraid I get so much spam in the comments that I only check them occasionally, and I’ve got a bit behind with the blog so have only just signed in and checked them – we’ve been so busy! We’d love to see you again, and show you what we’ve done (I hope you approve!) Do let us know if you are coming down again, a more reliable way will be to email me at l_tempest at jlst.co.uk, I still don’t guarantee to check emails every day, but usually see it within a few days rather than a few months.

      Louise
